The B.C. Property Assessment Appeal Board has extended the deadline to appeal property assessments to June 1.

Normally, under the B.C. Assessment Act the deadline to appeal property assessments by BC Assessment to the board is April 30.

"The board is aware of the state of emergency due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the effect this may have on parties' accessing their right to appeal to the board," said a statement issued by the board on Friday. "As a result, the board extends the deadline for its appeals for this year... to June 1, 2020."

A provincial ministerial order under the B.C. Emergency Program Act provides the board with the authority to "waive, suspend or extend a mandatory time period" in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. The decision only applies to appeals that were due by April 30.
