One new case of novel coronavirus has emerged in northern B.C., the provincial health officer said Wednesday, raising the running count to 63 for the region.

It was among nine new cases confirmed over the past day for the province as a whole and pushed the total since the pandemic broke out to 2,550.

As well, there was one more death recorded - it occurred in the Fraser Health region - increasing that total to 162 while 22 more people have recovered, leaving 244 active cases.

For Northern Health, 61 had discontinued isolation as of Wednesday, leaving two active cases, one of which is in critical care, according to the B.C. Centre for Disease Control. No deaths from the virus have been recorded in the region. No deaths from the virus have been recorded in the region.

In a joint statement, provincial health officer Dr. Bonnie Henry and health minister Adrian Dix urged the public to be cautious as restrictions on access to businesses and other venues are slowly lifted.

"We are moving forward carefully into Phase 2, assessing our progress week by week, and we are encouraged by what we have seen so far.

"COVID-19 has a two-week incubation period, which means any new cases that are a result of the easing of restrictions will start to appear over the coming week.

"With this in mind, let's continue to take advantage of parks and other activities closer to home, and look to increase social interactions only after fully considering the risks to you and your family.

"Once we have a good understanding of how we are doing in mid-June, we'll have the data we need to determine our timing for further actions.

"This slow and thoughtful approach is our 'new normal.' It is grounded in what we know about COVID-19 today and will continue to be adapted as we learn more in the weeks and months ahead."
