Sixty-three new cases of COVID-19 in B.C. - including two in Northern Health - were recorded over the last two days, public health officer Bonnie Henry said Monday.

The count raised the number of cases confirmed to date to 1,266, but the growth in the percentage of new cases has been slowing, Henry said. She urged British Columbians to continue take the steps that have been bending the curve.

"It's testimony to the effort everyone in British Columbia has been making over these past few weeks but we must keep that wall strong," Henry said after noting B.C. remains in the middle of a critical week in containing the spread.

Twenty-three of the case recorded since the outbreak are in Northern Health. Seven are listed as recovered, leaving 16 active cases of which two are in critical care, according to the B.C. Centre for Disease Control.

Across B.C., 783 are now considered fully recovered, an increase of 79.

Among the 483 active cases, 140 are hospitalized and 72 of those are in intensive or high-acuity care.

One additional death was reported Monday, bringing the total in B.C. to 39. Henry said the person was a man in his 40s.

The public is being urged to stay at home as much as possible and to practice physical distancing of at least two metres when out in public as well as to wash hands frequently and for at least 20 seconds.

Travelers who have just arrived home are also urged to self-isolate for 14 days as are those who are feeling the symptoms of the virus.

"We understand the many sacrifices that are being made across the province right now to ensure that we do our best and everything we can to protect our families, our communities, our health care workers and our health care system," Henry said.
