The City of Prince George playgrounds, fenced dog parks and recreation facilities will be closed until at least May 30 in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The closure went into effect on Friday in response to provincial public health guidelines around social distancing and limiting public gatherings. Facilities affected include Masich Place Stadium, sports fields, baseball diamonds, skate parks and tennis courts.

"Signs are being placed at the affected facilities to indicate their closure. Additional closures may be added and/or closures may be extended past May 30 if the situation relating to the pandemic, such as Provincial Public Health Orders, warrants it," a statement issued by the city on Friday said. "The gates providing vehicle access to Connaught Hill and Nechako Riverside Park will remain closed until May 30. Parks and trails that allow for adequate physical distancing will remain open for the community to enjoy the physical and psychological benefits of green spaces."

Parks remaining open include Cottonwood Island, Ferguson Lake and Forests for the World, but anyone using the parks is required to stay two metres apart from other park users by provincial public health rules.

The city has been installing signs at city parks and trails since last week to remind users to practice safe social distancing.

The city is cancelling and a closing all bookings at outdoor civic facilities, parks and sports fields including the Lheidli T’enneh Memorial Park Pavilion and Bandshell, Masich Place Stadium, Connaught Hill and Rainbow Park Gazebo up to May 30. The city will notify user groups and the public when bookings will be accepted again.
