Unionized works at a camp along the Coastal GasLink pipeline project have ratified a contract.

The agreement between workers at Parsnip Lodge near McLeod Lake and Horizon North brings wage increases of up to 47 per cent over the duration of the two-year contract and immediate hikes of $5-7 per hour for most employees, UNITE HERE Local 40 said Thursday. Horizon North provides camp maintenance services.

The two year contract also includes health care benefits paid entirely by the employer and a travel stipend.

“I’m proud that Parsnip Lodge workers were able to come together and win this contract. As a Prince George local living in a city where the cost of living is skyrocketing, I’m just making enough to cover the bills. Now I have extra money in my pocket to better support my 16 and 17 year-old sons,” said Cindy Poitras, a general helper at Parsnip Lodge.

The new agreement comes after janitors at the Kitimat LNG project recently won a three-year deal, which sees them gain a 40-per-cent wage increase by the end of the contract.

UNITE HERE Local 40 now represents close to 500 camp workers in northern B.C.
