A mixed bag for long weekend weather

It won't rain the whole long weekend, said an Environment Canada meteorologist about the Victoria Day long weekend in Prince George.

"There's good news in that sense," meteorologist Bobby Sekhon said.

"It's going to be a typical Victoria Day long weekend for most of B.C., including Prince George. It's not very often that it's completely dry and it's not very often that it's completely wet, either. We're going to see a bit of that mixed bag this long weekend as well."

Saturday will be our best day with sunshine and a high close to 20C, he added.

"I think Sunday and Monday is when we see a bit of a trough move through and Prince George will be a little bit on the edge of that," Sekhon said. "There will be a chance of showers especially in the afternoon and evening of Sunday into Monday. There's also a risk of thunderstorms."

When the thunder roars, go indoors, he said is a good guide to protect ourselves from the elements.

"There's going to be a bit of everything - so we'll see some sun this weekend, but in addition to that we do have a chance of showers and a risk of thunderstorms," Sekhon said.

Highs for Sunday and Monday will be close to 20C and overnight lows of 7C is expected for Saturday night and 5C for Sunday and Monday night and that's above the 3C norm for this time of year.

"If we get precipitation it's probably a good thing because we are looking a little dry this month," Sekhon said. "We're half way through the month but we've only had about 20 per cent of the normal precipitation that we get. In May, June and July we're used to getting some rain so we can hope to maybe get some rain to help alleviate any drought or forest fire concerns."

It's always nice to get a little sun on days off to get a little vitamin D, he added.

"So it's not going to be super warm or super cold, so fairly typical May long weekend," Sekhon said.
