ACAPULCO, Mexico — Canada's Bianca Andreescu was eliminated in the semifinals of the Mexico Open after falling 6-4, 3-6, 7-5 to Sofia Kenin of the United States.
The 18-year-old from Mississauga, Ont., jumped out to 3-0 lead in the first set before dropping five straight games and eventually losing the set.
Andreescu fought back in the second and broke Kenin twice to pull the match even at one set apiece in the hardcourt event at The Princess Mundo Imperial.
The teen fended off one match point late in the third set but was eventually broken and lost the match.
Andreescu is the top-ranked Canadian women's player at No. 71 and has started off the season with some impressive results.
She won the Oracle Challenger in California two weeks ago for her first career WTA title.
Kenin will face China's Wang Yafan in the tournament final after Yafan rallied past third-seeded Donna Vekic of Croatia 2-6, 6-3, 6-1.
Second-seeded Alexander Zverev of Germany advanced to the men's final by beating Britain's Cameron Norrie 7-6 (0), 6-3.
Ranked No. 3 in the world, Zverev will face Nick Kyrgios of Australia. Kyrgois beat third-seeded John Isner of the United State 7-5, 5-7, 7-6 (7) in the late semifinal.
Zverev has 10 ATP Tour titles, winning five times in 2017 and four last year. Kyrgois has four career titles. He beat top-seeded Rafael Nadal in the second round.
