If only Canadian university basketball games lasted 38 minutes, not 40, the UNBC Timberwolves would have been celebrating a win Saturday over the Lethbridge Pronghorns women's team.
The Pronghorns, who trailed the T-wolves for most of the game, hit five foul shots in the final 84 seconds to defeat UNBC 73-69 and complete a two-game U Sports weekend sweep in the Alberta city.
Madison Landry hit a jump shot to put UNBC back in the lead, 69-68 with 1:39 to play but those were the last points the T-wolves were able to muster. Teesha Olson and Zoe Dahl each sunk a pair of free throws and Kathryn Hankins went 1-for-2 from the charity stripe to ice the victory for the Pronghorns (4-8).
Jessica Bachynski shot a game-high 17 points and also had 10 rebounds for Lethbridge, while Dahl finished with 11 points. UNBC guard Stacey Graham held a hot hand from three-point range and finished with 14 points. Maria Mongomo put up 12 points and 10 rebounds and Vasiliki Louka collected 10 points for the T-wolves (3-9).
Lethbridge trailed 25-7 after 10 minutes and 36-26 at halftime. The Pronghorns closed the gap to eight points by three-quarter time.
The Pronghorns beat UNBC 89-70 on Friday.
Meanwhile, in the men's battle Saturday, Lethbridge improved its U Sports record to 8-4 after a 76-63 win over UNBC. Dejon Burdeaux spiced the Pronghorns' attack with 21 points, eight of which came from the foul line. Elliott Sentance had 15 points and 10 rebounds and Mike Pierzchala hit for 14 points.
Austin Chandler led the UNBC attack with 21 points. He went 4-for-5 from three-point land, while James Agyeman found the range for 11 T-wolves points.
The UNBC men fell 82-71 to Lethbridge on Friday. The T-wolves (4-8) have now lost four straight.
Both UNBC teams will be back in action this weekend at the Charles Jago Northern Sport Centre, where they will face the Mount Royal University Cougars Friday and Saturday.
