Team Connell off to provincials
The Alyssa Connell rink clinched a spot in the Tim Hortons B.C. Junior Curling Championships on the weekend.
The Connell foursome defeated another Prince George rink, skipped by Jessie Withey, in a best-of-three playdown held Saturday at the Prince George Golf and Curling Club. Connell won the first game 8-7 in an extra end and took the second one 7-4.
In the opener, Connell picked up single points in each of the first three ends but Withey tied the score with three in the fifth. The rinks traded single points in the sixth and seventh ends and Connell scored three in the eighth to seemingly take control. However, Withey came back with a deuce in the ninth and a steal of one in the 10th to force the extra end. Connell, with the hammer in her possession, prevailed in the 11th.
In the second game, Withey led 2-1 after five ends but Connell turned the contest in her favour with three points in the sixth end and a steal of two in the seventh. Withey took singles in the eighth and ninth ends and Connell closed out the game with one in the 10th.
Other members of the Connell rink are third Bailey Eberherr, second Jordan Henson, lead Erin Ross and coach Rick Fewster. The Withey team is rounded out by third Carly Connor, second Hannah Lindner, lead Carsyn Hamilton and coach Doug Dalziel.
Connell and company will represent the northern zone at provincials, Dec. 29 to Jan. 3 at the Kamloops Curling Club.
