Matyas, Balazs lead the pack

Zach Matyas and Emma Balazs were the quickest high school competitors at the Cottonwood Island cross-country running meet, held Saturday in the local park.

Matyas completed a six-kilometre senior boys course in a winning time of 22 minutes five seconds, while Balazs finished her 4.1km senior girls race in 15:43.

Matyas, from Duchess Park, beat College Heights runner Isaac Goodrich (23:17) to the line. Thomas Orvain, also from Duchess, was third in a time of 25:36.

Balazs, a Kelly Road athlete, finished ahead of Fiona Raymond (D.P. Todd, 16:28) and Abbey Goodrich (College Heights, 18:52).

Other category winners were: Brett Barwise, elementary boys, 2.2km course, time of 11:59; Robyn Barwise, elementary girls, 2.2km course, 10:59; Colton Illingworth, bantam boys, 4.1km course, 15:04; Grace McTaggart, bantam girls, 4.1km course, 17:29; Arik Andreschefski, juvenile boys, 4.1km course, 15:18; Sage Bialuski, juvenile girls, 4.1km course, 16:24; Boyd Marchant, junior boys, 4.1km course, 16:41; Julia Babicz, junior girls, 4.1km course, 16:48; Nick Bartell, open male, 6km course, 21:29; and Alexis Thornhill, open female, 6km course, 29:26.

The next race is Saturday at D.P. Todd secondary. Start time is 11 a.m.

Prince George will host the north central zone high school championships on Oct. 20 and provincials on Nov. 3.
