On Friday, the westbound lanes of 15th Avenue will be closed near the intersection with Victoria Street to allow city crews to repair a sewer pipe that broke last month.
Crews started work excavating the section of 15th Avenue between Redwood and Victoria Street on Thursday, resulting in the closure of both eastbound lanes and one westbound lane. On Thursday afternoon, the city issued a statement saying the work must now move to the westbound lanes.
"In order to locate the leak in the sewer line and repair the line, city crews must now move the excavation over into the westbound lanes of 15th Avenue towards Parkwood," the statement said. "Consequently, all westbound lanes will be closed starting tomorrow morning. Eastbound traffic will also reopen tomorrow morning for one lane."
The project is still expected to be completed by the weekend. No businesses or residences are expected to lose water or sewage utilities during the repair.
“Last month, a major buildup of material in the system along 15th Avenue caused a break in a pressurized sewer line that was installed in the 1960s,” a statement issued by the city on Wednesday said. “In recent weeks, crews completed a temporary bypass operation further up 15th Avenue near Edmonton Street to maintain capacity in the lines until repairs could be undertaken on the broken line. The City of Prince George thanks residents for their patience and understanding as this important operation is carried out.”
