Online poll: Nothing wrong with students enjoying donut and pizza days

In our latest Delta Optimist online poll we asked readers is it time parent-led school fundraisers only offer healthy food options?

An occasional parent-organized school pizza fundraiser was the leading response of the latest Optimist online poll.

Keep those pizza and donut fundraiser days as long as they are only offered periodically.

That’s the consensus of one of our latest online polls that ran April 18 to April 22 and asked readers “Should parent-run school fundraisers and lunch programs offer only 'healthy' food to kids?

The poll received 340 responses including 136 from Ladner and Tsawwassen. Of the three options, “Maybe. It's all about moderation. Doughnuts and pizza are okay as treats, but not all the time” was the leading choice with 43 percent of the vote.

The other two options were split right down the middle. “Yes. Children already eat way too much food high in salt and fat” and “No. Parents alone should decide what food they want their kids to eat. The nanny state should butt out,” each received 29 percent of the total vote.

Results are based on an online study of adult Delta Optimist readers that are located in Ladner/Tsawwassen. The margin of error - which measures sample variability - is +/- 5.28%, 19 times out of 20.

Delta Optimist uses a variety of techniques to capture data, detect and prevent fraudulent votes, detect and prevent robots, and filter out non-local and duplicate votes.
