The Lions Gate Bridge is closed Wednesday morning (April 6) after old growth protesters blocked the bridge in both directions.

The Lions Gate Bridge was blocked Wednesday (April 6) morning by protesters pushing for the end of old-growth logging in B.C.

Save Old Growth protesters blocked the bridge around 8:20 a.m., closing traffic in both directions, however the protest was short lived, as the roadway was cleared around 15 minutes later.

In a statement to North Shore News, Vancouver Police Department confirmed two men, aged 19 and 20, were arrested on the bridge.

In a statement released by the old-growth advocates early Wednesday morning, the group said the action comes as the provincial government has still not acted to pass legislation to immediately end all old growth logging in British Columbia. “This is part of an ongoing escalation to demand an end to old growth logging,” it read.

“Over our dead bodies will we let the provincial government destroy beautiful British Columbia. We are trying to protect this country and province from societal collapse, which is now locked in due to inaction on climate change,” Julia Torgerson, a spokesperson for Save Old Growth, said.

The action comes as four people were arrested on Monday morning after blocking the Ironworkers Memorial Second Narrows Crossing. The group conducted a wave on protests in January, which also resulted in the arrests of 54 people.
