A Prince George man was fined for poaching a spike bull elk out of season.
The incident occurred near Hudson's Hope in October, 2018, according to information released by the B.C. Conservation Officer Service. A spike elk is an elk with at least one antler that doesn't branch above the ears.
A joint investigation by the Conservation Officer Service and RCMP determined a male had trespassed on cultivated land to kill the elk. The evidence of the elk's sex and the head had been removed from the carcass, which was dumped in the bush.
Investigators were able to match DNA taken from the head to that of the dumped carcass.
The poacher was fined $3,000, plus a 15 per cent victim surcharge.
A spokesperson for the B.C. Ministry of Environment wasn't immediately able to provide any additional details, including the name of the man.
