Canfor reducing production at Western Canada sawmills

Cuts will remain in effect for a minimum of four weeks

Canfor Corp. will be cutting production at its Western Canadian sawmills starting Monday.

All of the company's B.C. sawmills, including those in the Central Interior, will be among those impacted, company spokesperson Michelle Ward confirmed.

The reductions will last at least four weeks and reduce production by at least 100 million board feet, the company has said.

"The ongoing global supply chain crisis has resulted in transportation issues that are among the worst we’ve experienced as an organization and led to unsustainable inventory levels," Ward said.

"For most of our sawmill facilities this means that we’re moving to operating on a four-day week where currently they are working a five-day production week.

"We are working hard to support our employees through this time. Each of our facilities are in the process of developing site specific plans to identify maintenance projects and other activities to best accommodate requests to work during the downtime."

The announcement comes two days after Canfor Pulp Products Inc. extended a shutdown of its Taylor pulp mill a further six weeks, also due to trouble shipping product.
