6 new TV series filming in B.C. this summer and fall

From a Percy Jackson and the Olympians new Disney+ series to a murder mystery set on a luxury ocean liner, this is what's filming in and around Metro Vancouver.

A handful of TV shows are filming in beautiful British Columbia this year.

It may be the end of Riverdale and Cole Sprouse sightings in Vancouver, but with the Directors Guild of Canada (B.C. chapter) accepting a tentative agreement and averting a strike, it's poised to be a busy summer and fall with filming happening in and around the Lower Mainland.

Interestingly enough, all of these series are from streaming sites including Hulu, Amazon Prime, Disney+ and Paramount+ and each have a full season order. Comic book series and YA and children's book adaptions are on order, as well as a murder mystery and a female-centric superhero story. Here's what's filming this summer and fall.

Career Opportunities in Murder and Mayhem

Delightful curmudgeon and TV/Broadway/film/Instagram star Mandy Patinkin stars in this new Hulu series which already has a full season, 10-episode order. Patinkin stars as the “world’s greatest detective” who sets out with his protégé (Violette Beane) to solve a murder aboard a luxury ship that is sailing across the Mediterranean.

Production dates: Aug. 4 to Dec. 6, 2022.

Hourglass (Godzilla series)

Deadline first announced that Apple TV+ is working on a live action Monsterverse series, tentatively titled Hourglass. Set in San Francisco after the destructive Godzilla vs. the Titans battle, the series will follow a family that tracks its roots to the mysterious Monarch organization.

Production dates: July 6 to Dec. 19, 2022.

A post shared by Disney+ (@disneyplus)

This highly anticipated Disney+ series adapted from Rick Riordan’s mythic novels has a bunch of big names attached, including Walker Scobell (who received support from his The Adam Project co-star Ryan Reynolds), Megan Mullally, Leah Sava Jeffries, Aryan Simhadri and Jason Moustakas. Disney+ has already posted about filming being under way and it is expected to last until mid-December.

School Spirits

This new Paramount+ series is based on a graphic novel series by Nate and Megan Trinrud and Maria Nguyen, which is set to be published in 2023. Starring Cobra Kai’s Peyton List, this YA mysterious focuses on a teen who spends her time in the afterlife investigating her mysterious death.

Production date: Aug. 15 to Nov. 2, 2022.

The Spiderwick Chronicles

Another Disney+ show adapted from a beloved book series, The Spiderwick Chronicles is about a family who moves into their great-uncle’s home and uncovers a world of fairy tales that exists parallel to their own lives. Like Percy Jackson and the Olympians, this is not the first time this book has been adapted — there was a film starring Freddie Highmore (The Good Doctor), Seth Rogen and Martin Short made in 2008, as well as a video game. No word yet on who will star in this reboot.

Production dates: Sept. 27 to Jan. 27, 2023.

The Power

There aren't many details about this new female-centric Amazon Prime series except an intriguing logline: “A group of teenage girls mysteriously develop a special power that allows them to electrocute people at will.” The cast includes Leslie Mann, AuliÊ»i Cravalho (Rise), Tim Robbins and John Leguizamo. Vancouver is just part of the production for this series, which has already spent time filming in the U.K.

Production dates: July 18 to Aug. 26, 2002.
