While traditional Christmas events are taking a virtual approach or are being cancelled, a Richmond church is offering a drive-in Christmas Eve service for everyone.

Church on Five is hosting a one-hour church service on their driveway for community members on the evening of Dec. 24.

There will be what is normally expected at a regular Christmas Eve service, a short message on what Christmas is about and caroling at the event.

Chris Wilson, a lead pastor of Church on Five, says the service is a way to bring “some sense of normalcy” to Richmondites who are used to going out for Christmas Eve.

“With COVID-19 fatigue settling into people this holiday season, a lot of people are mourning their loss of traditions,” says Wilson, adding that social interaction is an important part of mental wellness.

“We want to do something … during Christmas to remind the community to have hope and celebrate together at a distance in the weirdest Christmas Eve of our lives.”

He added that while the event will be outdoors, they are only allowing 50 vehicles per service due to pandemic restrictions.

Two services will be offered at 4:30 and 6 p.m. on Dec. 24 at 10200 No. 5 Rd.

Registration is required and can be done through the church’s website.
