A man who caught Prince George RCMP's attention for allegedly driving without insurance is now facing more serious charges following a pullover on Saturday morning.

Crown counsel has approved one count of possessing a firearm contrary to an order and two counts of breaching probation against Leo Joseph George, 42.

RCMP said George was first noticed near 17th and Victoria where his vehicle was pulled over.

The officer arrested him on suspicion of possessing a controlled substance and a subsequent search of the vehicle uncovered a replica handgun and ammunition, police said.

Police described George as a "prolific offender." Court records show a lengthy criminal record for offences committed in Vancouver, Kamloops and Prince George.
In February, he was sentenced to 3 1/2 months in jail for dangerous driving, and 2 1/2 months for motor vehicle theft, committed in Prince George.

George has since been released on bail with a court date near the end of this month.
