Katherine Carlson, the executive director of the Central B.C. Railway and Forestry Museum, puts the final touches on Thomas the tank engine. They convert the 1520 steam engine for Friends of Thomas Days at the museum on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

He's a very useful engine, and this week he is chugging into the station at the Central B.C. Railway and Forestry Museum.

Fans of Thomas the Tank Engine can travel to the fictional Island of Sodor on today, Saturday and Sunday, and you only have to go across the downtown CN Rail tracks to get there.

"Join us for the fun-filled Friends of Thomas Days," said Katherine Carlson, executive director of the Central B.C. Railway and Forestry Museum. It's a nod they give every year to the animated star of books, movies and TV shows.

"Wildly popular, book these days off on your calendar to make sure you don't miss the spectacular fun," Carlson said. "Our trains play dress-up and are magically transformed into 'Friends of Thomas.' Enjoy rides on the Cottonwood Minitrain, there is a barbecue (noon to 3 p.m. each day), popcorn, crafts, and many more fun treats."

The history park is loaded with artifacts large and small from the industrial sectors that most shaped modern Prince George - the railroad and the forestry enterprises. When Thomas is in town, the display locomotives, passenger cars and vintage train buildings get a storybook focus.

The gates are open 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. each of these special days. Regular admission in effect, with minirail rides for $3. The barbecue will offer burgers, hotdogs, popcorn, beverages and more, with ice cream available in the gift shop.
