You can join this B.C.-wide virtual picnic Saturday

While you won't be able to hang out with your pals in the park anytime soon, you can join them for an online picnic this weekend.

Hosted by the B.C. Parks Foundation, the Big At Home Picnic takes place this Saturday at 1 p.m. In order to join, simply spread out your blanket and set up your picnic anywhere in your home and hop online. You can set up in your living room, balcony, front or back yard – wherever you feel most happy and have a strong internet connection.

Virtual attendees will connect with other people other people using by visiting the Big At Home Picnic Facebook event page

For those who aren't on Facebook, the organization will share picnic tips and ideas on its blog. You can join the province-wide toast, and then tune in to live streams from artists, performers and hosts from around the province. At the same time, you’ll be connected with all the other British Columbians who will be watching, together.

"While the B.C. Parks Foundation normally would be encouraging you to get out to parks, they are crowded and some people are not respecting social distancing. That’s why we're organizing this virtual, at home picnic," states the event post. "Please respect all provincial and federal health requests so that we can end the spread of COVID-19 as quickly as possible."

Here are tips on how to picnic at home safely:

  1. Stay in your home!
  2. Some great places to picnic: your living room, kitchen, balcony, front or back yard.
  3. Picnic on your own, or with a partner, your kids or your pet. Stick to your immediate household. Connect with other people virtually using video platforms like Facetime, Google Hangouts or Zoom.
  4. Practice good hygiene by washing or sanitizing your hands frequently and covering your mouth when coughing or sneezing with a tissue or your upper sleeve.
  5. Adhere to all health and safety guidelines from the Provincial Health Authority.

Share a photo or video from your picnic and post it in the Facebook event, or share it on Instagram or Twitter by tagging #athomepicnic and @bcparksfdn.
