Thomas good as gold at provincials

Prince George gymnast Samantha Thomas grabbed a gold medal on the uneven bars at the B.C. provincial gymnastics championships in North Vancouver on the weekend.

Prince George gymnast Samantha Thomas grabbed a gold medal on the uneven bars at the B.C. provincial gymnastics championships in North Vancouver on the weekend.

Thomas' first-place finish in Junior Olympic Level 6 (athletes born in 1997- 2001) was the only gold medal on the weekend for the Prince George club.

Thomas also placed 10th on the floor. Kayla Hanson, Madeline Temoin and Shannon Fairservice also competed in the category.

In JO Level 6 (athletes born between 2001-2003), Dallyn Long was fourth on the floor and Hannah Gould was ninth on the beam and 10th on the uneven bars out of 23 athletes. Sydney Hamilton, Rachel Massey and Farrah Normand also competed.

Jaymie Hinks landed a silver medal on the vault in JO Level 7. Out of the 35 athletes, the biggest category of the event, Hinks earned a respectable fourth place in the all-around. She was sixth on floor, seventh on the beam and 10th on the bars.

Tianna Millns also competed in the division.

Rhiana Palfy won a bronze medal on the uneven bars in JO Level 8, en route to an eighth place in the all-around. She was also fifth on the vault and 10th on the bars. Reid Powers was ninth on the bars and floor, while Miranda Doerksen, in her final year of provincial competition, finished a respectable seventh on the vault.

Mekenna Parker also competed in the division.

In her first provincial meet, Jade Jacobs grabbed fifth in the all-around out of 32 athletes. She won a bronze medal on the beam, fourth on the bars and ninth on the vault.

Lina Goto finished seventh all-around in JO Level 9. In her final season of competition, Goto struggled with injuries and the demands of her Grade 12 year. Provincials was her first meet of the year and she finished fifth on the beam, seventh on the vault, eighth on the floor and ninth on the bars.

In Level 3 boys, Lane Oke won a bronze medal on the floor with a solid routine and finished fifth on the pommel horse.

Colbey Simunac had a great floor routine as well, finishing fifth.

Next up for the gymnasts is the P.G. Invitational and Zone 8 championships May 2-3 at the Prince George Gymnastics Club.
