Gairns great at Grouse

Local alpine skier Lucas Gairns posted three top-10 finishes at the Provincial Open Series finals, held on the weekend at North Vancouver's Grouse Mountain.

In the slalom discipline, Gairns was at his quickest on Sunday when he finished in second place, just 0.09 seconds behind the winner. Gairns started the competition with a sixth-place showing on Friday and an eighth-place result on Saturday.

Isabelle Gibson of Prince George was also on her skis for the races. Her best placing was 34th on Friday. She finished 37th on Saturday and Sunday.

Gairns and Gibson were both entered in the under-16 category.

The Provincial Open Series was the last qualifier for two events - the CanAms, which start March 17 at Invermere's Panorama, and the international Whistler Cup, which begins April 1 at Whistler.

St. Rose swift on short track

Keanan St. Rose gave proof he's one of B.C.'s rising stars in short track speed skating.

St. Rose, a member of the Prince George Blizzard, competed at the B.C. short track championships in Kamloops on the weekend. In the train-to-train category for 13-year-old boys, he tied for the gold medal with Vancouver's Lukas MacDonald.

Two P.G. skaters - Sylvia Masich and Robyn Barwise - brought home medals in the train-to-train 14-year-old girls division. Masich zipped to silver and Barwise earned bronze.

Meanwhile, in train-to-train for 11-year-old girls, Olivia Masich finished in bronze-medal position.

All four skaters will be in Edmonton in two weeks for the Canada West short track national championships.
