Speed skaters summon Blizzard of gold

The speed skating Blizzard that hit the Prince George Coliseum last weekend left a bountiful medal harvest in its wake. Twenty-eight Prince George Blizzard Speed Skating Club athletes earned medals at the two-day Northern Communities FUNale meet.

Twenty-eight Prince George Blizzard Speed Skating Club athletes earned medals at the two-day Northern Communities FUNale meet.

Noah St. Rose, Ryan St. Rose, Evan Calloway, Keanan St. Rose, Julia Kreitz, Sylvia Masich, Tommy Kreitz, Morgan Aucoin, Bobby Kreitz, Callie Swan, Nico Hiller, Carolina Hiller, Rylan Gaudet, Lucas Hiller, Carley Budac, and Ryan McGreish, all of the Blizzard club, won gold medals.

Olyvia Masich, Jayden White, Owen McDonald, Brooklyn White, Claire Hunter-Leiski, Kadeja White, and Corine Masich won silver; Sarah Dereshkevich, Landon Young, Samuel Dalla Lana earned bronze; and Noah Young and Cole Rader won iron medals.

The inaugural event attracted 80 skaters, many of whom are in the 9-14 age category that would make them eligible for the for the 2015 Canada Winter Games in Prince George and the Team B.C. qualifying events that will take place in 2014.

There will be 18 provincial team berths available (10 for short track skaters and eight for long track skaters) for the 2015 Canada Games speed skating team.

Six other Northern B.C. clubs took part in the two-day meet, including the Fort St. John Elks, Dawson Creek Speed Skating Club, Chetwynd Auroras, Mackenzie Thunderbolts,

Vanderhoof Clippers, and Fort St. James Falcons.

The 13-year-old White, as well as Dalla Lana, 12; Budac, 16; Morgan Swan, 15; Callie Swan, 13; Lucas Hiller, 15; Carolina Hiller, 13, Nico Hiller, 13, and masters skater Duane Swan; will be in Port Coquitlam this weekend to compete in the provincial short track championships.
