Soltes plays for Slovakia

Prince George Cougars forward David Soltes will be suiting up in red and blue during the Christmas break.

Prince George Cougars forward David Soltes will be suiting up in red and blue during the Christmas break.

That's because Soltes has been selected to represent his home country, Slovakia, at the 2014-15 world junior hockey championship in Toronto and Montral from Dec. 26 to Jan. 5.

The second-year forward for the Cats has collected eight goals and three assists in 20 games this season.

He's tied for the team lead in power-play goals with four, and is tied for second in goals scored at home with six.

It's the first time Soltes is suiting up for Slovakia at the world juniors. His season with the Cougars in 2013-14 was cut short by a season-ending knee injury and he only played 14 games.

The 19-year-old represented Slovakia at the world under-18 championship in 2012-13. In six games, he scored four goals and added one assist.

"We're very excited that David will get the chance to represent his country at such a prestigious international event," said Cougars head coach Mark Holick in a statement. "He's had to overcome a very serious knee injury that kept him out for a majority of last season, and we know he'll be an asset to Team Slovakia."

Soltes is scheduled to leave Prince George on Dec. 11 and will join his teammates in Slovakia in time for two exhibition games - Dec. 21 against Switzerland and Dec. 23 against the Czech Republic in Peterborough, Ont.
