Steve Simonson has been hired as the interim head coach of the UNBC men's Timberwolves soccer team.

The school announced Monday afternoon Simonson will take over for Alan Alderson, who resigned last month for a job with the Vancouver Whitecaps FC program in London, Ont.

Simonson was most recently head coach of Victoria Highlanders FC when the team played in the United Soccer League's Premier Development League from 2012-14. He had been involved with the Highlanders since the team's inception in 2007 and also served as head coach of the club's reserve team and as head of player development for the organization.

"I'm looking forward to the opportunity to work with the exceptional group of student athletes at UNBC," said Simonson in a press release. "The Timberwolves program continues to improve each season and this year we will once again field a team that can compete in a strong Canada West conference."

Simonson's appointment is effective immediately and his term runs until November.
