Quebec athletes dominate podium

Quebec reigned supreme at Lakewood Dental Arena on Wednesday.

In the men's short track speed skating 500-metre A final, all four competitors were from Quebec. The gold medal went to Simon Godin, the silver to Marc-Olivier Lemay and the bronze to Antoine Roy. In the B final, two more Quebec skaters - Gabriel Maille and Dominic Goyette - finished first and second. Carter Chambers of Manitoba was the highest-placing non-Quebec resident, with a third-place finish in the B final, sixth overall.

In the women's short track speed skating competition, Quebec also swept to gold, silver and bronze in the 500m A final. Rosalie Tremblay took the gold and was followed across the finish line by Beatrice Lamarche and Camille De Serres-Rainville.

In the B final, Vanderhoof's Alison Desmarais finished second to Innzbruk Richards of Ontario. Richards crossed the line in 46.916 seconds and Desmarais stopped the clock in 46.955 for a sixth-overall finish.

In gymnastics on Wednesday, the male all-around medals were awarded at the Northern Sport Centre. With a point total of 82.234, Justin Karstadt of Ontario was golden, Felix Dolci of Quebec took the silver (81.300) and Matthew Halickman of Quebec earned bronze (80.217).

In ringette, being played at the Coliseum, B.C. lost in the quarterfinals, 7-4 to Manitoba. Team B.C. features Prince George player Sydney Irving and Quesnel residents Colleen Moorhouse, Jessica MacDonald and Hannah Young. In the other quarterfinal games, Quebec beat Alberta 4-3 and Ontario downed Nova Scotia 7-6. In the late game, New Brunswick defeated Saskatchewan 9-2.

In the wheelchair basketball tournament, the final day of pool play saw Ontario beat B.C. 62-24. Team B.C., which includes Prince George players Avril Harris and Joel Ewert, completed pool play with a 1-3 record. In other games, Ontario downed Manitoba 56-27, Saskatchewan defeated P.E.I. 84-51, Quebec beat Alberta 65-47, New Brunswick topped Nova Scotia 86-31 and P.E.I. beat Manitoba 65-20. Placement games and semifinal contests are scheduled for today.

At Tabor Mountain, the dual moguls finals were held on Wednesday. On the men's side, Robbie Andison of Ontario won gold. Silver and bronze went to Quebec skiers Alexandre Lavoie and Renaud Julien. In the women's event, Quebec's Valerie Gilbert was the gold-medalist. Searik Markle of Alberta took silver and Catherine Brunelle of Quebec picked up the bronze.

In alpine skiing at Purden Mountain, men's slalom gold went to Adrien Grabinski of Alberta. Declan McCormack of Ontario was the silver-medalist and Dawson Mead Hill of Alberta took the bronze. In women's slalom, Ashleigh Alexander and Stephanie Profitt - both from Team Alberta - won gold and silver while Justine Clement of Quebec finished in bronze-medal position.

In the para male division, Alexis Guimond of Quebec grabbed gold while silver and bronze went to Alberta's Omid Raoufian and Ontario's Greg Moogk, respectively. In the para female category, Frederique Turgeon of Quebec was golden. Mel Pemble of B.C. was the silver-medalist and bronze went to Sarah Gillies of Ontario.

In target shooting, the air rile finals were held Wednesday at CNC. Men's medal winners were: gold, Jeremy Ruddick (Saskatchewan); silver, Frederic Lemoine (Quebec); and bronze, Brandon Hardy (Alberta). In women's air rifle, Samantha Marsh of Newfoundland and Labrador was on target for gold. Silver went to Leia Hoot of B.C., while Julia Warren of Saskatchewan was awarded bronze.
