Old Sticks playing for slo-pitch gold

Considering they're being sponsored by an accountant in their run for gold this weekend at the Canada Plus-55 Seniors Games, the guys on the Prince George Deloitte's Old Sticks slo-pitch team felt an obligation to live up to their bargain.

They had to try to end up on the right side of the ledger at the three-team tournament in Sherwood Park, Alta., and so far they've done that, qualifying for the gold-medal game. The Old Sticks booked themselves a spot in the men's 55-and-older championship game against the Barley Boyz of Alberta when they defeated Camrose 18-11 Friday morning.

They went on to lose their second game of the day 17-13 to the Barley Boyz in a game that had no bearing on the standings. The Old Sticks finished with a 3-3 record.

"We were already in the final, so I played everybody today," said Old Sticks coach Larry Mehrer.

"We've been hitting the ball pretty well in the last three of four games. We started a little cold but we're playing well as a team and that makes you win."

Other tournament results were as follows: Deloitte's Old Sticks 9 Barley Boyz 4; Camrose 8 Deloitte's Old Sticks 7; Barley Boyz 4 Deloitte's Old Sticks 3; Deloitte's Old Sticks 15 Camrose 3.

"It's been lots of fun, the weather's been good, with no rain," said Mehrer. "There's 33 sports here so there's lots going on. We've been cheering on the other Prince George team."

That other team, the Arc Angels 55-and-older mixed slo-pitch team, qualified Friday for the bronze medal game at their seven-team tournament. Results were not available.
