Grace Northrop of Prince George is now competing against older women on the national judo stage this season but that hasn't impeded her path to the medal podium.

Northrop, a 17-year-old from the Hart Judo Academy, won the silver medal Saturday in the under-21 women's minus-52 kilogram weight class at the Quebec Open tournament in Montreal.

Last year Northrop competed in the under-18 age class.

Lavanna Laass, 18, a former Hart Academy member who now attends the University of Lethbridge, won silver in the U-21 women's minus-63 kg event Saturday and also won bronze Sunday in the senior women's competition.

In other local results from the Quebec Open, Taylor Schaus of the Prince George Judo Club finished Saturday's U-18 minus-55 kg competition with a 2-2 record. Schaus will attend a Team B.C. training camp this week at the national training centre in Montreal and is entered in this weekend's Ontario Open in Toronto.

Bruce Kamstra of the Hart Judo Academy and Aline Strasdin of the Prince George Judo Club are the Team B.C. coaches.
