Locals shine in ultra-marathon

Reid Roberts and Gwen Preston cleaned up at the Dirty Duo ultra-marathon. In the 50-kilometre trail race, held last weekend in North Vancouver, Roberts placed third overall in a time of four hours 15 minutes 23 seconds.

In the 50-kilometre trail race, held last weekend in North Vancouver, Roberts placed third overall in a time of four hours 15 minutes 23 seconds. Preston, meanwhile, was the eighth person across the finish line and the first woman. Her time was 4:43:15.

The overall winner, Dave Melanson of North Vancouver, stopped the clock in 4:06:16. Second-place finisher Hassan Lotfi-Pour, also of North Vancouver, posted a time of 4:08:18.

Five other Prince George runners -- Carolyn Diehl Bax, Steve Staves, Robyn Kaplan, Janice Karpes and Lisa Neukomm -- also entered the Dirty Duo.

Diehl Bax, who was competing in an ultra-marathon for the first time, finished 20th overall and fifth in the women's division with a clocking of 5:15:08.

Staves completed the course in a time of 5:27:57, good for 23rd overall.

Kaplan ended up 43rd overall and 13th among the women with a time of 6:20:57.

Karpes, another first-time ultra-marathon participant, placed 44th overall and 14th in the women's category. Her time was 6:32:48.

Neukomm didn't finish the race.
