Kodiaks Red was oh-so close to gold.

The local 14-and-under girls volleyball team claimed the silver medal at the Kelowna Super Spike tournament last weekend. In the final, the Kodiaks took on T2VB Crew 1, the top squad from the Kelowna Volleyball Club, and fell in three sets, 25-27, 25-19, 15-6.

"It was not the result we hoped for in the final but the girls can all be very proud of their play," said Kodiaks Red coach Cam Young. "When they come together with passion, enthusiasm, commitment and support for each other it is a joy to watch."

The loss in the final was the only one the Kodiaks suffered. In pool play, they rolled to victories against T2VB Crew 2 of Kelowna (25-13, 18-25, 15-4), I Dig It Elite (19-25, 27-25, 15-9) and Elevate Ice (25-6, 25-19). Next, in the semifinal playoff round, Kodiaks Red downed Focus Lightning of Surrey 25-17, 25-12 and booked a spot in the final.

Members of the Kodiaks are Karyn Hampe, Rachel Young, Sophie Martin, Sophie O'Rourke, Taryn Atkinson, Taylor Salton, Kendra Nicholson, Annika Brown, Macyn Unger, Brooklyn Van Camp, Emily Bast and Sydney Fowler. Jp Martin is the other coach and Teresa Bell serves as team manager.

Next up for Kodiaks Red is the north region championships, April 8 in Prince George. Later in April, from the 28th to the 30th, the team will compete in the provincial championships in Abbotsford.
