Brandon Hagel scored the only goal of the shootout to give the visiting Red Deer Rebels a come-from-behind 3-2 win Tuesday over the Prince George Cougars.
The Rebels left winger rifled a shot between the legs of Cougar goalie Ty Edmonds and Red Deer goalie Lasse Petersen did the rest, denying Radovan Bondra and Jesse Gabrielle to preserve the victory, ending the Rebels' eight-game losing streak.
Red Deer forward Lane Zablocki forced overtime when he tied the game 2-2 with the only goal of the third period. Jared Freadrich cashed in a two-man advantage in the second period for the other Red Deer goal. Bondra and Kody McDonald were the Cougar goalscorers.
The Cougars outshot the Rebels 36-24.
Prince George went 0-for-5 on the power play, while the Rebels scored on one of their five manpower advantages.
The loss was the third straight for the Cougars (39-19-3-2), the only time this season they've dropped three games in a row. The B.C. Division leaders are now just one point ahead of the second-place Kamloops Blazers (37-19-2-4). Each team has 10 games left in the regular season. The Blazers and Cougars will play each other four more times. The Blazers pounded the Edmonton Oil Kings 7-0 Tuesday in Kamloops.
The Oil Kings will be in Prince George to face the Cougars Friday and Saturday at CN Centre.
