He has joined the Moose, and in the not too distant future, Jansen Harkins could be boarding the Jets.
Now that the Prince George Cougars' season is over, the 18-year-old centre is about to get another taste of pro hockey. Harkins has signed a tryout contract with the Manitoba Moose, the Winnipeg Jets' American Hockey League affiliate.
The Jets picked Harkins in the second round, 47th overall, in the 2015 NHL draft. He's coming off a 24-goal, 57-point season with the Cougars, his third year in the WHL, and he led the Cats in the playoffs with two goals and five points in four games.
Two seasons ago, the North Vancouver native topped the Cougars' scoring list with 79 points in 70 games. In 211 career WHL games Harkins has picked up 54 goals and 170 points, as well as 116 penalty minutes. He also has two goals and nine points in nine career playoff games.
The Cougars were eliminated from the WHL playoffs Wednesday at CN Centre when they lost 4-3 in overtime to the Seattle Thunderbirds and were swept out of the first round.
“Jansen has worked very hard over the course of his junior hockey career to put himself in this position and we are very proud that he has been given this opportunity,” said Cougars head coach Mark Holick, in a team release. “He’s coming off a strong series offensively against Seattle, and that confidence should bode well for him as he looks to make a good impression at the next level.”
The Cougars picked Harkins second overall in the 2012 WHL bantam draft and he's gone on to success in Hockey Canada's programs. He captained Team Pacific at the 2013 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge and played for the national team at the Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournament in 2014 and the World Under-18 championship in 2015. He also played for Team WHL in the 2015 Canada Russia Series.
Harkins attended the Jets' rookie camp last August and also played in the NHL Young Stars rookie tournament with the Jets in August.
