As good as the Prince George Cougars looked on the ice Tuesday night at CN Centre for most of their game against the Swift Current Broncos, they can't escape the fact they blew a two-goal lead and lost 5-4 in overtime.
Tyler Steenbergen's backhander through the legs of goalie Ty Edmonds, 59 seconds into overtime, completed the comeback for the Broncos (8-2-0-1), who kept pace with the Regina Pats (7-0-3-0) atop the WHL East Division standings.
The Cougars (10-2-1-0) appeared to have the game in control when Justin Almeida scored a power-play goal 6:52 into the third period to give the Cats a 4-2 lead. But the Broncos responded a few minutes later with goals 53 seconds apart to tie the game.
With Cougars forward Josh Curtis serving a tripping penalty, Broncos forward Lane Pederson one-timed a high shot that floated into the net behind Edmonds at 10:32. Then at 11:25, Calvin Spencer fired the equalizer at even strength when he was set up in the slot.
The winner came after a face-off win in the Cougars' end. Steenbergen gained the puck and drove to the net, finding a hole between Edmonds' legs for his second goal of the game.
The loss was the third-straight on home ice for the Cougars (10-2-1-0), whose eight-game winning streak was stopped a week ago when they lost twice to the Everett Silvertips. The Cats were coming off weekend road victories in Seattle and Tri-City.
Brad Morrison returned to the Cougars' lineup Tuesday after missing one game with a minor shoulder injury. The 19-year-old New York Rangers draft pick assisted on Tate Olson's goal in the second period which tied the game 2-2. Morrison leads the Cats in scoring with four goals and 11 assists for 15 points.
Glenn Gawdin notched the other goal for Swift Current. Yan Khomenko and Jesse Gabrielle also scored for the Cougars.
Shots were 34-31 in the Cougars' favour.
The Cougars host the Saskatoon Blades Saturday at CN Centre.
