Even though it's August, Justin Hampole was in mid-winter form.

Hampole, a local figure skater who trains at the Northern B.C. Centre for Skating, was in Burnaby last weekend for the annual Summer Skate competition. In the novice men's Under-17 division, he finished fourth overall thanks to personal-best performances in his short program and free skate. Hampole's short program was a highlight of the event and netted him a score of 41.31. That total had him in first place going into the free skate, a routine that earned him a best-ever 107.67 points from the judges.

Hampole was a pre-novice men's bronze-medalist during the 2015 Canada Winter Games in Prince George.

In the pre-novice men's U16 category in Burnaby, Reese Johnson of the NBCCS placed 11th with a score of 37.76. In other results, Myah Miller earned gold in the Star 8 event (28.87 points) and Kailey Logan finished 10th in the pre-juvenile U13 group. Logan's score was 15.62.
