Foul weather delays O'Dine's World Cup race

Turkey is the new kid on the Federation Internationale Ski circuit this season but Mother Nature was not co-operating Friday in what was to be the country's inaugural World Cup event.

For the second consecutive day, high winds and low visibility with blowing snow forced organizers of the World Cup snowboard cross to postpone a day of training and qualifying runs on the slopes of Ezurum, Turkey.

That kept Meryeta O'Dine from trying to improve her seventh-place world standing for at least another day. The individual race has been rescheduled for today, weather permitting, with a team event to follow on Sunday.

The Ezurum resort in Turkey, located in the Palendoken Mountain range region of eastern Anatolia, was used for the 2011 Winter Universiade (World University Games).

There are two other World Cup stops on the snowboard cross tour - next weekend in Bansko, Bulgaria and the following weekend in Feldberg, Germany - before the Olympics in Pyeongchang, South Korea.

After five events this season, O'Dine is the top Canadian in the World Cup rankings with 1,700 points. Carle Brennaman of Comox is 12th, Tessa Critchlow of Kelowna is 17th and Zoe Bergerman of Erin, Ont is 18th.

Lindsey Jacobellis of Vermont continues to lead the women's standings with 3,380 points, while Alex Pullin of Australia is the top male racer with 3,026.

Kevin Hill of Vernon ranks 17th in the points.
