As many as 50 riders are expected to take their tire treads to the single track at the Cycle Logic Otway 4 Hour Enduro Challenge Sunday.

The mountain bike race involves participants shifting gears as many times as possible in four-and-a-half hours around an 11-kilometre loop at Otway Nordic Centre.

"It's a sanctioned event and we'll have a DJ with music and great food and prizes," said organizer Derek Ingram of the Prince George Cycling Club. "We want people to come out and race and make it into more of a community event."

Prizes will be awarded for all age categories and everyone is eligible to win a mountain bike.

The race starts at 10 a.m. with a mass start in front of the lodge and concludes at 2:30 p.m. in the stadium area.

It's open to male and female competitive and recreational mountain bikers in solo and teams of two in five different age categories - 14-19, 20-29, 30-39, 40-49 and 50-69.

So far, athletes from Kamloops, Williams Lake, Quesnel, Fort St. James and Prince George have registered.

Online registration is open until tomorrow night (Thursday, Aug. 21) at www.pgcyclingclub.ca/races/otway-challenge or riders can register the day of for an extra $20.

Last year's race had to be canceled due to lack of participants.

Ingram said hosting an event like the Enduro Challenge is another way to attract more people to the sport.

"We have some world-class single tracks here and we want the racing community to get bigger," he said.
