Cougars sweep pre-season series

Sure, the Prince George Cougars doubled up the Edmonton Oil Kings to beat them 4-2 Saturday night, the last contest in a two-game homestand at CN Centre.

And yes, they swept the series after defeating the defending Memorial Cup champions 5-3 Friday.

And yes, the Cats are now undefeated in regulation in the Western Hockey League's pre-season with a record of 3-0-1.

Yet Cougars head coach Mark Holick was cautiously optimistic after four games into the exhibition season.

"I'm happy, they learned how to win whether it's exhibition or regular season," he said after Saturday's game. "I'm happy with how they competed and there were some warts in some areas of the game. They worked hard and showed some really good signs. "[But] it only gets harder the longer you go into the season."

With a large roster of 35 players, Holick and his staff split the lineups for the series, as a more veteran squad laced up their skates Friday against the Kings, while a much younger roster played a role in Saturday's victory.

Forwards Lance Yaremchuk and Tyler Mrkonjic gave the Cats an early 2-0 lead in the first period.

Colby McAuley padded the lead with two goals of his own in the second and third period for a 4-0 cushion until the Oil Kings tallied goals with 10 minutes left from Tyler Robertson and Lance Bauer.

McAuley was just signed to a WHL contract by the Cougars last weekend and is one of 18 remaining forwards hoping to make Prince George's roster.

The Cougars killed off all 12 of their minor penalties they received, and were successful with the man-advantage, scoring on two of their six opportunities.

Adam Beukeboom and Matt Kustra combined in net to stop 37 of 39 of Edmonton's shots on goal, while Patrick Dea and Tyler Santos stopped 26 of 30 shots the Cougars fired at them.

Former 16-year NHL veteran Roman Vopat whom the Cougars hired as an assistant coach was behind the bench for the first time Saturday night.

Holick said his experience will only help the players in the long run.

"I've always wanted to have a three-man coaching staff and he'll develop a relationship with the kids who have an opportunity for success," said Holick. "Roman has gone where these kids want to go."

The Cougars are expected to trim their roster by today - Holick wouldn't say how many players will be let go - prior to their final exhibition game this Friday in Kamloops against the Blazers.

They'll spend the weekend practising prior to leaving for Portland next week where they'll open their season on the road Sept. 20 against the Winterhawks.

Prince George returns home to CN Centre Sept. 26 and 27 for a two-game stand against the Kelowna Rockets.
