Cats harvest Thom from Wheat Kings

For something as intangible as a sixth-round draft pick, the Prince George Cougars have added a physical asset to their blueline.

For something as intangible as a sixth-round draft pick, the Prince George Cougars have added a physical asset to their blueline.

The Cougars announced Thursday they've acquired 18-year-old defenceman Dominic Thom from the Brandon Wheat Kings in exchange for the Cougars sixth-round bantam pick in 2016.

The Wheat Kings picked the Calgary native in the ninth round of the 2011 draft. In two games with Brandon last season he had one assist and finished with a plus-three rating on the ice. The six-foot-three, 190-pound Thom played 29 games last season for the Calgary Mustangs of the AJHL, recording one goal, five assists and 61 penalty minutes.

"Dominic brings an element of size and compete to our back-end," said Cougars general manager Todd Harkins.

"He's mobile for a big defenceman, can move the puck and takes pride in blocking shots to defend his net. His presence in training camp will provide added competition for our 2014-2015 roster."

The Cougars open training camp a week from today.
