Andy Beesley, the city's associate director of recreation and cultural services, has submitted his resignation, effective next Friday.

Sources close to The Citizen have indicated Beesley will join the Prince George Cougars and their new ownership group as the WHL team's business manager.

"I have provided notice to the city and that my last day is on May 2, and I'm going to be pretty silent apart from that at this point," said Beesley on Friday. "I can't give you any hints. My new employer has some confidentiality contractual issues so I'm not able to say a word."

Greg Pocock and a group of local investors, which also includes NHL defencemen Eric Brewer and Dan Hamhuis, have bought the Cougars from Rick Brodsky, pending approval by at least a two-thirds majority of WHL governors, who will vote on the sale next Thursday in Calgary. Assuming the deal is approved, the Cougars are planning a public reception to introduce the new owners on Tuesday, May 13 at CN Centre.

Beesley and Pocock have a long history of collaborative hockey efforts, dating back to the 2006-07 season with the Farr Fabricating bantam team, when Pocock was the head coach and Beesley was the team manager.

Beesley also served as manager of the Cariboo Cougars major midget hockey team.

Beesley, 56, has been working with the city for the past five years as arenas manager and in February was promoted to a dual role overseeing recreation facilities. The 2013 Citizen of the Year worked several years for Sunlife Financial in Prince George as a manager and before that spent 20 years operating his own consulting business throughout Western Canada, specializing in conflict resolution, team building and strategic planning.
