No beds at hospital

I'm currently in Vancouver at St. Paul's hospital with my 78 year old dad and my 73 year old mother who ended up here for valve replacement on her heart and a vein transplant on her leg.

Dad and I are staying in a nearby hotel and my parents have been here for 28 days. My sisters and I are taking turns helping out because my dad also needs someone around.

Four days ago the doctors said mom is good to go to Prince George, she still needs a hospital but she doesn't need to be here. Perfect we thought, all our family is there, we can help her get up and out of that bed and also the financial burden of being in Vancouver would be lifted.

Ok, when can she go? Well, we need to wait for a bed in PG and we need to wait for a plane to be available. I understand a plane but a bed?

The next day we are told we have a bed but no plane and then yesterday we are told we lost the bed.

With some research on the phone I am told the hospital is full most of the time. They have spots designated in hallways for beds. I'm also told there are many long term care patients occupying rooms who should be elsewhere but there is nowhere in PG for them. Some have been there two or more years.

I'm worried for our city and the surrounding communities that rely on our hospital. It's not the doctors and nurses and down the line, it's management and government. They need to step up. It's only going to get worse as our population ages and we live longer. Stay healthy, friends.
