I would like to inform the readers of The Citizen that the Council of Mackenzie has voted to proceed with construction plans too build a new community hall on the site of the existing and running curling rink.

The citizens of Mackenzie were hardly aware of the demolition of the curling rink as a consequence of the plan, as noted by the over 800 adult signatures on a petition to save the rink, presented to council the next meeting.

Mayor Pat Crook on Jan. 9 simply dismissed the petition saying it was to late to change the plan.

The curling rink, four sheets with lounge, was gifted to the town, is run by volunteers, with public interest in the sport for recreation on the rise. Last year we had classes from all grades coming to try out the Canadian sport.

The rink is an asset to this community. The building is multi-purpose in the summer.

At this early stage in the planning I would expect the mayor and council to listen to its citizens and consider all alternatives.
