Doctors have missed the mark

A group of doctors have used a full-page advertisement (Jul. 12, 2014) in the Prince George Citizen to announce their opposition to Northern Gateway. These opinions were repeated in a later article (Doctors speak out against, Jul. 18, 2014).

A group of doctors have used a full-page advertisement (Jul. 12, 2014) in the Prince George Citizen to announce their opposition to Northern Gateway. These opinions were repeated in a later article (Doctors speak out against, Jul. 18, 2014).

As someone who grew up in this community, I am just as concerned with the health and wellbeing of the residents of Prince George. But I believe responsible opinions need to be based on sound evidence, and unfortunately these doctors have missed that mark.

The truth is, Northern Gateway has gone through the most comprehensive environmental review of its kind in Canada's history. And Northern Gateway has exceeded the requirements for safety by, for example, placing pump stations along the route that will be staffed 24/7, by installing safety control valves on either side of major water crossings, and by using only double-hulled, meticulously certified tankers.

It's also important to note the revenues from Northern Gateway will help pay for our health care system and other vital social programs - a fact these doctors fail to acknowledge. Moreover, Northern Gateway will bring jobs and new business opportunities that are the foundation of healthy and prosperous communities.
