Song of the Day

With the holidays coming, Christmas music is everywhere. You can't escape it.

While my song of the day is not exactly a Christmas song, it does come from what is arguably the best movie ever made about the life of Jesus.

The song, which became a hit single in its own right, ends the film on an inspirational and uplifting note.

Of course I'm talking about the Monty Python 1979 cult classic Life of Brian and the song Always Look on the Bright Side of Life by Python regular Eric Idle.

As the movie ends, the hapless protagonist Brian has been crucified by the Romans and is justifiably feeling a little down. However, a fellow crucifixion victim -played by Idle - cheers him up with this catchy, heartwarmingly irreverent song.

Soon all the crucified victims on Golgotha are singing, tapping their toes and whistling along.

The song continues to be relevant today, appearing twice in the Tony-award-winning musical Spamalot (a local production was put on by Judy Russell earlier this year).

And according to a study by The Co-operative Funeralcare, Always Look At the Bright Side of Life was the most-requested funeral song in the U.K. in 2014.
