During the summer I wrote about how wonderful it was that folks like Judy Russell create top notch arts training and performance opportunities for our city's youth. So I am excited to share with you a couple of other youth-focused arts events that are coming up. We have so many talented youths in this city and we really need to invest in opportunities to keep them engaged with artistic pursuits. The benefits are immeasurable - for them, for their families, and for our community.
The Community Arts Council, The Prince George Symphony Orchestra and The Prince George Conservatory of Music, are co-hosting the first-ever Prince George Young Canadian Music Festival, occurring Friday October 20 to Sunday October 22, 2017.
The Festival will feature workshops and performance opportunities for local young musicians age 19 and under, for the occasion of Canada 150 celebrations.
Participants can either be taking private music lessons, or can be band students at our high schools.
All young musicians are welcome, and the programs are completely free!
Students will have the opportunity to work with top music professionals as well as the chance to perform alongside the PGSO and PGCM faculty. Workshops will take place on Friday, October 20 at the PG Conservatory, at 3555 5th Avenue.
On Saturday the October 21, the PGCM will be hosting the PGSO's annual Youth Concerto Competition at 2pm. At 7pm there will be a Faculty Recital featuring selected workshop participants as well as PGSO members and PGCM faculty.
Finally, on Sunday October 22 at 2 pm, the PGSO's O Canada! concert will feature selected workshop participants both in the orchestra and as soloists. All events will be free to participants, additionally families of participants will receive a discounted ticket price of $15 for the Sunday PGSO concert.

And keep your eyes open for news about another youth art event coming up, the "PG Teen Art Showcase" being produced by the Community Arts Council and the Prince George Library. The event will start with a free workshop for young artists, with some of the city's top professional artists, on Saturday November 25th. The program will conclude with a month-long exhibit and art auction during the month of February. There will be cash prizes, free art supplies, public receptions and the chance to see your art.
