Long past time to choose sides

Last week, Citizen columnist Nathan Giede proclaimed that he is glad that Donald Trump occupies the White House. He further wrote that he would "even go so far as to shout from the roof tops that we all ought to be full of thanksgiving and praise that he is in the helm of the most powerful nation on Earth as de facto leader of the Free World. He is the king we deserve for our sins against democracy."

What has he been smoking? For someone who is supposed to be a practicing Catholic, how can he come out with such malarkey and crap?

Trump has been in office almost seven months and what has he done as leader of the Free World? He and his swamp has showed the world what an ugly American actually is. He has turned the presidency into a dictatorship. Donald Trump has shown his weakness over and over again. He failed big time to show that he is fit for the job. The U.S. is the laughing stock of the world, thanks to dumb old Donald.

My Jo, who was born in Cologne, Germany, is one of the early baby boomers who has to bear the collective guilt of what happened when Hitler rose to power because he wanted to make Germany great again and found the right people at the right time to grant him that wish. Jo stated from the day when Trump's election slogan showed up on that red hat that this was the way Hitler began. Trump too found the right people at the right time. Jo was at that time quiet with his opinion. It is very clear to see that he was bang on.

Recently the Independent, a British newspaper, wrote that earlier this year, the Trump administration was pushing to downplay the threat of white extremism by erasing neo-Nazis and white supremacists from the U.S. government's counter-extremism program and moving it to focus exclusively on Islamist terrorism.

This is not what my Marine father, my uncle John and my brother in law, Mickey, fought for. I sit at this computer with tears, agonizing over the events of Charlottesville, Virginia, which was invaded by KKK, Neo Nazis and other white supremacist organizations and individuals. It ended up in a domestic terrorism attack by a white supremacist driver on the opposing crowd that had gathered.

Heather Heyer, an innocent bystander, lost her life as well as Virginia State Police Officers Jay Cullen and Berke Bates, who crashed with their observation helicopter.

Meanwhile, Trump displays all the characteristics of a sociopathic, uncompassionate, narcissistic liar. Yet, everyone continues to play along by giving him the news coverage and the nightly show openings on the leading talk shows, all of which feeds that psychological character flaw, providing it with continuing bursts of energy as if nothing is wrong.

How does this word leader react? Methinks that his fingers must have been broken because, for several days, the twitter king was silent.

Two days later, he reads a lifeless statement followed by more rhetoric. On Tuesday, Trump actually defended white nationalists and had the audacity to equate Robert E. Lee with George Washington. This is far from making America great again. That is the problem with such simplistic election slogans. Everyone has a different picture of the America which was great at one time, including the white supremacists as some expected and we are now finding out.

No brown shirts needed.

The rhetoric is the same, just a different country and some 90 years later. This time it is not the Jews. It is the Muslims, the blacks, the Mexicans, and anyone else who is taking away jobs, statues and the right to hate those who are different in the most famous melting pot of the world, where streets are paved with gold for those with the right coloured skin and fundamentalist Christian beliefs.

So, Nathan, my column has come full circles. Are you a practising Catholic who believes in the preaching of Pope Francis about loving all people or are you a fundamentalist Christian who believes in white supremacy?
