A workshop aimed at showing businesses and the general public how to identify counterfeit cash and other types of frauds will be held next Tuesday evening at the Civic Centre.

Hosted by the Prince George RCMP's community policing unit, it will feature Bank of Canada senior analyst Sabrina Cordeiro and Cst. Stephen Dunn of the RCMP federal serious and organized crime unit.

Cordeiro will show business owners and cashiers how to use security features on the new currency to know when counterfeit money is being passed.

"The routine checking of bank note security features is the first line of defence against counterfeiting," Cordeiro said. "The new polymer bank notes are easy to verify to help protect against counterfeiting.

"Remember that counterfeiters rely on people not checking their money in order to pass their counterfeit notes. Even the most advanced security features are helpful only if people check them."

Dunn will discuss popular frauds and scams, including identity and debit or credit card theft.

According to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre, Canadians reported losing over $11 million dollars to identity fraud and identity theft in 2013.  And it's estimated the total represents just five per cent of the actual amount lost.

The workshop is set for April 8, 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. in room 208, everyone is welcome and admission is free.
