Downtown Prince George is going to become more cyclist-friendly.

On Tuesday, the Rotary Club of Prince George presented the business improvement association with a $22,000 cheque to fund bike rack installations. The new infrastructure will be primarily along George Street between Third and Seventh Avenues.

An area manufacturer will fill the bike rack order, said Rotary club director Ross Birchall. Discussions have begun with local fabrication shops to explore custom designs branded with Rotary insignia best suited to the area's challenges, such as narrow sidewalks and winter elements.

"Studies have shown that installation of bike parking along any street will reduce empty storefronts and that businesses with a rack directly outside their door will benefit from increased sales," said Downtown P.G. executive director Carla Johnston. "Studies have also show that the installation of bike racks lessens the damage to area tress and lamp standards, where cyclists frequently lock their bikes."
