Relay for Life puts call out for survivors

Organizers of the Prince George Canadian Cancer Society Relay for Life event are looking for local cancer survivors who want to participate in the annual victory lap.

Organizers of the Prince George Canadian Cancer Society Relay for Life event are looking for local cancer survivors who want to participate in the annual victory lap.

Last year more than 200 cancer survivors walked around Masich Place stadium to celebrate their treatment and to show solidarity with others who are fighting the disease.

"Cancer survivors are our honoured guests and they are the reason we relay," Relay for Life team lead Helen Owen said in a news release. "The sea of survivors taking the victory lap gives us all inspiration to keep fighting back against cancer."

The victory lap is one of the highlights of the 24-hour fundraiser held each year to raise money for local programming by the Canadian Cancer Society. This year's relay on May 10 and 11 also includes an evening fight back ceremony (7 p.m. on May 10) and a luminary ceremony at midnight.

This year's victory lap will take place at 10 a.m. on May 10. Registration is available online at convio.cancer.ca or by calling 250-564-0885. There is no cost to participate solely in the victory lap.

"We celebrate and honour our survivors, and their caregivers, during the survivor victory lap," Owen said. "We invite and encourage all cancer survivors and their caregivers to come and join us."

Registration is ongoing for people who want to take part in the relay and help raise funds. Last year the Relay for Life brought in more than $548,000 through the Prince George event alone, a new local record.

The deadline to register online or in person at 1100 Alward St. is April 25.
