Regional district antes up Games money

The Regional District has signed on to next year's Canada Winter Games in the form of $1.5 million.

The Regional District has signed on to next year's Canada Winter Games in the form of $1.5 million.

On Wednesday, regional district directors, city officials and host society representatives unveiled a new Games sign at the regional district's western boundary on Highway 16 near Bednesti Lake.

"The impact of hosting these Games will be felt far beyond the Prince George municipal boundary," said RDFFG board director Art Kaehn. "We felt it was fitting to demonstrate in some small way that the 2015 Games is a great thing for the entire region."

More signs will go up at all of the other RDFFG boundary markers: at Highway 97 south of Hixon, Highway 97 north of the Mackenzie junction, east on Highway 16 near the Alberta border and on Highway 5 outside of Valemount.

Money from the regional district will be used to support sustainability initiatives such as solid waste and carbon emission tracking and reductions, the Northern B.C. regional engagement program and the post-Games legacy program.
