Job action kicks off Wednesday for School District 57, with recess being the first cut made in the province's teachers dispute with the government.

Called "stage 1 strike action," the district's teachers will not supervise students outside of regular instructional time or as set out by an essential services order.

"This means that supervision of school grounds and bus loading areas will be carried out by exempt and management staff of the district," said a letter to parents from superintendent Brian Pepper. "This also means that recess will not take place until further notice."

To accommodate this change, most elementary school classes in the city will begin seven minutes later and end eight minutes earlier each day. Bus pick-up and drop-off times will not change.

During this early job action stage, teachers won't be attending any meetings with management staff nor provide or receive any routine printed, written or electronic communication from principals or administrators.

"With increased supervision and a more time intensive communication method required, principals will be less available than usual," Pepper wrote.

Updates on labour action will be posted to the district's website at www.sd57.bc.ca.
